In case you are building your own custom desktop linux system, you may also run into the problem that some characters (particularily east asian) are not displayed correctly.

I’ve recently run into exactly this problem with my own custom ublue os and - at least for fedora - the solution is to install the default-fonts-cjk package to get the fonts required to display these characters.

To test whether everything is working correctly on your system, you can check a page with many of those characters, like this Japanese Hiragana Unicode Chart.
